Meet Gerrie Dercksen: HMWS’s Business Development Manager for Western Australia

A high-voltage electrician by trade and a career that spans high-voltage electrical, breakdown, fabrication, hydraulics and project management, Gerrie’s journey to his current role is a story of both technical precision and a passion for problem-solving. Starting his career as an apprentice high-voltage electrician, eventually working with industry heavy-hitters MGTA and Rio Tinto before moving to HMWS in 2019.

Starting as a breakdown electrician, Gerrie was recruited by HMWS for his diverse skillset and experience in the heavy vehicle sector and played a crucial role in aiding HMWS’s transition from working primarily with light vehicles to expanding into heavy vehicles. Quickly progressing to floor supervisor and project manager, there was no denying the sale spikes that occurred any time Gerrie visited a sight. This finally led him into his current role as Business Development Manager, where his passion for problem-solving and client satisfaction comes to life.

“I think the most rewarding part of my work is finding solutions, especially when clients don’t realise there’s a simple solution to their problem,” Gerrie explains.

With a drive to solve problems, he thrives on the challenge of simplifying complex issues with practical, easy-to-implement solutions.

At the heart of his approach is his hands-on experience. Gerrie’s background gives him a unique edge in understanding what clients need, even when they may not know it themselves.

“When I go to clients, I don’t just pitch a product; I understand their needs first. It’s about finding the right solution and helping them see the possibilities,” he says.

His enthusiasm and energy have been key to building strong relationships with clients. Gerrie’s ability to connect on a personal level is reflected in his consistent success in increasing sales across various sites. One of Gerrie’s proudest moments at HMWS was helping the company expand its presence in new industries, such as agriculture. While the company has long been a staple in the mining sector, Gerrie’s focus on diversifying into agriculture has opened doors to innovative product solutions. One notable example is the current development of anti-pest solutions to deter cockatoos and rats from harnesses in agricultural machinery. One of the many solutions HMWS is looking to roll out in the near future.
